Is Life Coaching just this new fad that’s come out of nowhere is a common question people are asking. It makes sense because Coaching is something a lot of people haven’t heard about. On top of that it seems like every other person you meet is a life coach and when you ask about credentials, you come away not being very convinced.
So what is a Life Coach? does it fit your faith and Muslim life style because people often think ‘Am I not suppose to get that from my local imam?’ or we can find it all in the Deen. My answer is absolutely and that exactly the journey I take my people on 😊
So, in this article I’m going to tell you the pros and cons of Coaching and Life coaching generally, but I’ll show you a very real example from my life and my own journey as a Master Coach, Trainer, Quranic Intervention Therapist, and a good old fashioned teacher.
So where does this all start, It starts with You and my desire to impact your life or people like you that I’ve been working with for so long. My desire to master human behavioural sciences, Purpose, optimal living and high performance .
You see I’ve been on a journey of more than 25 years that took me from the Corporate world of business management consultancy and sales and marketing, to then leaving the world of money, cars and city lifestyle to find myself a purposeful life of meaning, spirituality and Deen which led me to the old dusty corridors of the Al-Azhar Islamic seminary, in Cairo, Egypt where I began my journey with the Quranic and Islamic sciences. After starting there I came rushing back to my parents in the UK where I’ve set up the Academy from which I have been delivering training and education. In a nutshell that’s it.
Now that doesn’t really tell you anything about Coaching, well not directly at least. Coaching is something that has come about at the back end of that journey, for the last 6 to 7 years. During most of this time, I operated under the banner of Teacher, and informally counselling from a theological perspective.
Although I have trained in different psychology models, I have fully dived into the science of The Nafs, a classical Islamic knowledge. This has served as the basis for my own coaching and training.
What is a Life Coach?
A coach in my mind is someone who helps people to overcome challenges, become the very best version of themselves and create a life they’ve only been dreaming of up until now. Coaching can happen in different formats.
You’ll find people who identify and specialise as a Life Coach, Marriage Coach, Mindset Coach, Trauma Coach, Business coach, Parenting coach, Emotional resilience coach, Nutritional and Diet coach, Digital marketing Coach, 6 Figure Business coach and the list goes on, you wouldn’t believe.
You may be looking at the last one thinking ‘that’s a bit materialistic’ or even ‘oh yes please, that’s what I want’, and I would understand. However, the truth is that successful coaches of any sort, regardless of what their niche is, can make anywhere from £30 to 100,000 and even more.
So back to what a Coach does, or at least what do Life Coaches I work with do? we help to improve the quality of life of people who are just ready to transform their lives, and create a fearless life, without anxiety, without overwhelm and without the past experiences or trauma holding you back.
Coaches help you to create balance, get past procrastination, take action and achieve your wildest dreams that most people think impossible. Coaches help you to become the highest performer you have already inside of you, to live your potential. Coaches will help you to get over obsession of doubtful thinking that sabotages your progress, and break through the glass ceiling that seems to be holding you back.
The kind of Coaching I train my clients on, helps you to get so deep that you transform your life from the core of your being. When you get to that place insha’Allah, you will become who you already are behind all of that exterior that’s holding you back, a true super power in your own life. Become independent, in need of no one but your Creator.
If you’re thinking ‘wow, that’s too much… is it really possible?’, then keep on reading.
Why get into Coaching?
People get into coaching for a few different reasons, but I’ll explain why I got into it because I find that a lot of Coaches resonate with my reasons because they themselves have had similar experiences.
So, the bottom line is that we want to do meaningful, purpose driven work. I personally have the desire to help improve the human condition. Now, that can’t be done in a better way that to align people with their purpose in life. We all have the purpose of connecting to Allah swt, but we also have different ways of manifesting that purpose.
So here’s the Benefits of a Career in Coaching in a nutshell.
1: I want to create an impact on people’s lives, to help them overcome any challenge, spiritual, psychological and physical. If I can facilitate to the change of one life, just improving one life at a time, I could make a difference in the world. I mean it really helps to feel like you’re doing something great in the world, serving Allah and helping others.
2: Have time freedom, be able to work when I want and having the flexibility to have complete autonomy. You see freedom from time restraints, location restraints is a basic freedom that most people struggle to gain. When you have a boss to go to, or a job that you are dependant on, I can say from experience, it sometimes makes it impossible to manage life in a way that you spend quality time with your family and loved one.
This freedom is one of the most valuable things I have ever experienced and having worked in the corporate world, where I would leave my home at 6am and get home at 8 or even 9pm every day of the working week, I truly value the freedom of not having those restraints Alhamdulillah.
I understand not everyone in the corporate world works like that, but if you ask most people, they start getting ready from the minute they wake up and work often overflows into the weekend. So life revolves around the career moves we make.
As a Coach I work hard, don’t get me wrong. I work exceptionally hard, but I absolutely love doing this work, as I feel it aligns with my purpose in life. So showing up every day to do this work, to help people solve their challenges, to grow their lives and actualise their potential, all of this is super exciting and you see them flourish in their lives. So if you’re looking for legacy, impact on the world, creating your bank of good deeds that will be your key to paradise in this life and the next, this is a good attempt at that insha’Allah.
3: Money Freedom. Yep, this is the one that people struggle with. We all need to live, but we all want to thrive also. When you’re eating humble pie, you might tell yourself I don’t need much, I don’t want much, but the truth is that it is the basic necessity of life and it is the natural default of a human being. We have been created to LOVE the dunya.
Love Love Love the Dunya.. that’s right. Don’t believe me?
look at what Allah swt says about this:
الْمَالُ وَالْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا
Wealth and Children are the adornment of the life of this world.
Surah AlKahf, 46
I mean hey, who doesn’t love to be able to have what they want, big or small, to live in spacious accommodation, to have the ability to have children and spend on them. To give their family the best they can. Who doesn’t want that? we all want to give our families the best of Dunya and Akhira.
So yes, coaching gives you financial freedom and even abundance, something that many careers don’t give. You can earn typically between £30k to £100,000 and beyond as I already mentioned.
But here’s the truth, most Coaches do not make anywhere near to a full time income and if they do, they are so overworked they become their own WORST BOSS. They overwhelm themselves with the sheer number of things they have to do, and end up giving up all of their freedom to enslave themselves to the money system they are trying to create.
