What does Bismillah mean? And why is it at the beginning of everything Muslims do and why does it mean so much that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon Him) said it throughout the day and night and in most situations.
The Saying of Bismillah or Bismillahirahman Arraheem is called ‘The Basmallah’ in Arabic. It is the beginning of all things, especially the beginning of all Good as you will see in this short video tutorial above. If you haven’t watched it yet, I suggest watching it as it will make more sense as I explain it with examples that you will relate to insha’Allah.
But to give you a brief Allah began the Quran with the Basmallah (which is to say Bismillahir Rahman Ar-Raheem).
It’s the very first thing we read when we open the Quran, we say it when we eat, when we get changed, when we enter the home and of course when we make wudu.
We are taught in the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) that we should say it at all times. And there’s a good reason…
It connects your every action to the remembrance of Allah. By saying this we think about Allah, and we are careful about what we say, eat and do. It virtually connects every action of the Muslim to Allah, making remembrance of Allah so much easier.

So, you don’t have to go out of your way to be connected to Allah. You can live your daily life and by this simple act of saying Bismillah and remembering Allah as you go about your day, you are connecting to Allah in a truly meaningful way.
How is it meaning you might ask? Well, it will help you towards good actions, ones that Allah is pleased with and just as important, it will help you stay away from evil action that Allah is displeased with.
Let’s be honest, you’re not going to say Bismillah and do something Haram (Prohibited in Islam). This is the remembrance of Allah on a practical level, one that will actually help you to mould your thoughts, character, and behaviour around what Allah is pleased with.
This is a true recipe for success in both Dunya and akhira insha’Allah.
